Much of the congregation eventually ended up in a new church building nearby, St Andrew’s Free Church built in 1852, but not before they worshipped for a while in the open air. This new congregation eventually joined the majority of the Free Church when it united with the United Presbyterian Church to form the United Free Church of Scotland in 1900. Rapprochement in and after 1908 led to a closer union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, leading to eventual re-unification in 1929.
