Newhaven was thus left with two congregations of the Church of Scotland which had arrived by different routes, ‘Newhaven-St Andrew’s’ and ‘Newhaven on Forth’ (the original church in Craighall Road). In 1974 the two churches re-combined into the original building and Newhaven on Forth once again became Newhaven Parish Church. The church is its people, not its buildings, and the history of church governance in Scotland, not least in Newhaven, has served to enrich the worship and deeply held beliefs of today.
The body of worshipers known as Newhaven Parish Church has come full circle in 160+ years and now meets in the old school house built in 1862 adjacent to the 1836 building and once used as the church hall. Originally one of the Madras schools of Rev Dr Andrew Bell for 26years, the ‘Madras Hall’, has recently been refurbished (completed Dec 2006) to meet the needs of the 21st Century.
